Autism Parent Support

You don’t have to walk this journey alone

The journey of parenting an autistic child can feel like a winding road. Some days the path is clear and you travel freely. And some days it feels like you can’t see the next bend in the road, so you’re not sure where you’re going or how you’ll fare.

Whether your child was recently diagnosed with autism or you’re a long-time warrior, I understand. I’ve walked with many families in their journey. I’ve held space for their feelings and fears, shared their joy when a child learns something new, and had raw and real conversations.

It may feel like you’re on your own after the diagnosis is given.

I’m here to support you after the diagnosis.

Autism 101

Understanding autism and what it means for each person on the spectrum takes time. Through one-on-one sessions we’ll talk through it broadly and then make sense of what it means for your child. These sessions are helpful even if your child was diagnosed years ago.

Next Steps (including IEPs)

I know you were probably given a lot of recommendations after your child was diagnosed. I know new recommendations come up as a child gets older. Together, we can make sense of recommendations and come up with a plan. I also help families navigate IEPs.

Weighing Options

Psychologists tend to give parents several pages of recommendations after an evaluation. There are so many things to think through and weigh! It can feel so heavy, urgent, and overwhelming. Through consultation I can help you weigh your options and prioritize what feels best to you.

Co-Occurring Conditions

Autism is a “whole-body“ diagnosis, which means we know certain conditions co-occur with it. Through consultation, you’ll learn about common co-occurring conditions, signs of them, how they can impact developmental progress, and what to do if signs start happening.

Long-Term Planning

Many parents have asked over the years what their child’s future will look like. The hard answer is we don’t know until we know. But the easier answer is that I can give you the info you need to make informed decisions, monitor your child’s developmental progress, and plan for future supports.

New Questions

It’s normal to have new questions as your child gets older. This is even true for caregivers who already autism experts. As children go through different developmental stages, new questions come up. I enjoy supporting seasoned caregivers.

Have a need but don’t see it here?

INITIAL CALL

To make sure our time together is meaningful, I’ll first need a good understanding of your child, their diagnosis, and the impact on your family. I also want to know your child and family’s strengths. You’ll likely walk away from this session having learned something new too. At the end of the session, we’ll talk about next steps for our time together.

CONSULTATION

Get ready to grow!

This is where the magic happens. The content of sessions will be based on your personalized consultation plan. What do you want to learn? What support do you need to support your child? We’ll cover the tools you need to take your next steps.

NEXT STEPS

With new knowledge and tools in your back pocket, you’ll be ready to move forward. For example, that could mean you’re ready to call that service provider, get a referral from a pediatrician, or talk with a loved one about your child’s diagnosis.

While consultation sessions typically have an end, my door doesn’t close. You can always return for more support!
